Are you having trouble with your 2004 Dodge Ram Diesel diesel fuel pump?

How can you tell that you’ve got a failing diesel fuel pump?

First, does the engine show some or all of these problems? If so, you might have a diesel pump problem.

  • Engine Refuses To Crank – When the vehicle’s fuel pump isn’t properly sending diesel to your injection system, the engine will fail to receive enough diesel, and will refuse to run.
  • Truck Hard To Crank – If the truck’s fuel pump is losing it’s strength, but has not entirely stopped pumping, you might find that the pump is not sending sufficient fuel to the injectors during cranking, resulting in a hard to start truck.
  • Substantially Reduced Diesel Engine Power – There are many potential problems that would cause lower than usual diesel engine horse power in your 2004 Dodge Ram Diesel – one such reason could be a fuel pump that’s not working properly.  If the fuel pump is not working efficiently, it may not be sending enough fuel to your fuel injector system to give the diesel engine it’s ideal levels of horsepower.  Because there are so many issues may be producing a reduction in power though, correct identification of your issue is important.

What is the cause of fuel pump problems in 2004 Dodge Ram Diesel Engines?

Occasionally diesel pumps go bad, most often due to contaminated diesel . When this occurs, your truck will likely encounter poor performance, difficulty cranking, or total failure to crank.

The following are typical causes that fuel pumps fail:

  • Impurities and/or bad fuel – Bad diesel pumps are ususally caused by contaminated diesel (contaminants in the fuel,) which can stop up the diesel pump, causing them to break.
  • Failing Fuel Pressure Regulator (MRomp). The fuel pressure regulator is a small part on the pump that will sometimes fail. From time to time only the MROMP fuel pressure regulator stops working, instead of the actual internal parts of the pump.  To diagnose if the MRomp is the problem, first look closely at the MRomp to identify if it has any metal flakes or other contaminants (trash, non-fuel liquid, etc.) within it, or around where it screws in.  If so, there’s a good chance that there’s a bigger problem that’s making the Fuel Pressure Regulator to fail, and you need to replace the diesel fuel pump and clean your diesel system.
  • Blown out freeze plugs. Occasionally the freeze plugs get blown out internally within the fuel pump.  If this is the case with your pump, this is an indication of serious damage inside the pump. Pumps with the freeze plugs blown out will need to be replaced, and the old pump’s core is not eligible for exchange.

When you have got pump troubles, Taylor Diesel is prepared to help you out. From drive in repair to testing, repairing, and restoring your current diesel fuel pumps, we provide the fuel injection services that you require to get your truck back on the road fast.
