Are you having problems with your 2006 Dodge Ram with 5.9L Cummins Diesel diesel fuel pump?

How to detect if your pump is going bad?

Primarily, does your diesel engine show one or more of these indicators? If that is the case, you could have a diesel pump problem.

  • Motor Won’t Run – If your engine’s pump isn’t properly feeding diesel fuel to the engine, then the engine may fail to receive enough diesel fuel, and will not run.
  • Truck Difficult To Start – If the engine’s diesel fuel pump is losing it’s strength, but has not entirely failed, it’s possible that the pump is failing to send the right amount of fuel to the engine while starting, resulting in a difficult to start-up truck.
  • Substantially Reduced Truck Power – There are many potential issues that would produce lessened engine horse power in a 2006 Dodge Ram with 5.9L Cummins Diesel – one possibility may be a failing fuel pump.  If the diesel pump is going out, it may not be sending enough fuel to your engine to give the diesel engine the optimal horsepower levels.  Because there are countless issues that could be resulting in power loss however, accurate identification of the engine’s problem is absolutely necessary.

How come pumps need to be repaired?

Sometimes diesel pumps fail, usually subsequent to contaminated diesel . When this happens, your vehicle will possibly experience poor power, cranking issues, or complete failure to start the engine.

These are common reasons that fuel pumps fail:

  • Impurities and/or bad fuel – Bad pumps are most often caused by contaminated diesel (contaminants in the fuel,) which can clog or damaage the diesel fuel pump, causing them to stop functioning.
  • Failing Fuel Pressure Regulator (MRomp). The fuel pressure regulator is a small part on the pump that sometimes goes bad. Occassionally just the MRomp fails, and not the actual internal parts of the fuel pump.  To diagnose if the Fuel Pressure Regulator is the source of the problem, you’ll need to look closely at the MROMP fuel pressure regulator to determine if it has any metal flakes or any other contaminants (trash, non-fuel liquid, etc.) on the inside of it, or near where it screws in.  If yes, there is probably a bigger issue that is making the MRomp to stop working, and you should rebuild or replace the diesel fuel pump and clean out your diesel system.
  • Blown out freeze plugs. Sometimes the freeze plugs will blow out inside of the pump.  If this is the case with your diesel pump, this is an indication of extensive problems within the fuel pump. Pumps that have the freeze plugs blown out will need to be replaced, and the core is not any good, so it cannot be exchanged.
