Are you having issues with your 2003 Dodge Ram with 5.9L Cummins Diesel diesel fuel pump?

Symptoms of a fuel pump failure:

First, does the diesel truck exhibit these signs and symptoms? If the answer is ‘yes’, you may have a fuel pump problem.

  • Vehicle Will Not Stay Running – When the diesel fuel pump isn’t properly feeding diesel fuel to your fuel injectors, the diesel engine may starve for diesel, and will not crank or run.
  • Vehicle Difficult To Crank – If the engine’s pump loses it’s strength, but hasn’t yet completely failed to work, there’s a good chance that it is having trouble sending the right amount of fuel to the injectors during starting, producing a very difficult to crank vehicle.
  • Substantially Decreased Power From The Diesel Engine – There are countless potential issues that would produce lessened diesel engine horse power in your 2003 Dodge Ram with 5.9L Cummins Diesel – one such reason may be a fuel pump that’s not working properly.  If the diesel fuel pump is going out, it might not be sending enough fuel to the injectors to give the diesel engine it’s proper amount of power.  Given that there are countless issues that could be resulting in a reduction in power though, correct diagnosis of the reduced power is important.

Why do fuel pumps need to be repaired?

Every once in awhile fuel pumps fail, usually because of bad diesel . When your pumps fail, your truck may suffer from poor performance, cranking problems, or total inability to crank the engine.

The following are common causes for pump failure:

  • Contaminants and/or bad fuel – Bad diesel pumps are often caused by bad diesel (impurities in the fuel,) which can the pump, forcing them to break.
  • Failing MRomp. The fuel pressure regulator is an electronic part on the diesel fuel pump that occasionally fail. Occassionally only the MROMP fuel pressure regulator stops working, rather than the actual internal parts of the fuel pump.  To diagnose if the MRomp is the source of the problem, you’ll first need to carefully examine the MROMP fuel pressure regulator to identify if it has metal flakes or any other contamination (trash, water, etc.) within it, or around where it screws in.  If so, there’s a good chance that there’s a more significant issue that is making the Fuel Pressure Regulator to fail, and you will likely need to rebuild or replace the pump and clean your diesel fuel system.
  • Blown out freeze plugs. From time to time the freeze plugs will blow out inside the diesel pump.  If this is the case with your diesel fuel pump, this is an indicator of serious damage inside the diesel fuel pump. Pumps that have the freeze plugs blown out will definitely need to be completely replaced, and the core is not any good, so it cannot be exchanged.
